Statement on Las Vegas Shooting

Our hearts are heavy with the memories of 59 lives and hopes for 527.

As we process what happened in Las Vegas on Sunday and how to proceed, we want to say it’s incomprehensible that this is our world. We want to say it’s incomprehensible that we should have to fight to prove that humanity matters. We want to say it’s incomprehensible that we should have to demand that our laws reflect humanity rather than money. We want to say it’s incomprehensible that we should have to convince our elected officials to preserve and improve our lives when that is their very job description. We want to say all of that, but we’ve long since accepted that it’s not only comprehensible, it’s the norm. It’s the expectation.

We have to fight to prove that humanity matters when lives are taken as they enjoy a night out at a concert.

We have to fight to prove that humanity matters when black lives are taken as they walk down their streets eating skittles.

We have to fight to prove that humanity matters when Muslim lives are taken as they break their fast during Ramadan.

We have to fight to prove that humanity matters when LGBTQ+ lives are taken as they celebrate pride in their love and self at a nightclub.

We have to fight to prove that humanity matters when students’ and their teachers’ lives are taken as they seek knowledge.

We have to fight to prove that humanity matters when women’s lives are taken as they face abuse from intimate partners.

And it’s exhausting; it’s overwhelming; it seems insurmountable. So we have to be human and allow our responses to be- allow ourselves to reflect, question, seek solace, and perhaps pray.

Then we remember that we are not alone in this. We are not alone in our fear, our anger, our sense of helplessness. But then we also remember that we are not alone in our desire to do a little good for this world, to love, to listen, and to fight back. And then we also remember that we are not helpless. We each have the incredible capacity do that little bit of good; and together, we have the incredible capacity to make change.

So we will do just that. We are with you today and always.
