Statement on Reversal of Title VII Guidance

How do you find the words to explain that a human is a human?

That sentence is the most basic, elementary thing we know. It is backed by science and proven in spirit.

And since we know it to be true, how do we, these many millennia later still justify discrimination? How do we look at our fellow person and say you are less than? What in our hearts is so hateful and fearful that we cannot look our equal in their eyes and admit and respect their equality?

Yesterday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions succumbed, yet again, to his hate and fear and withdrew Title VII guidance that protects transgender people from discrimination in the workplace. He said, “the prohibition on sex discrimination” encompasses discrimination between men and women but does not encompass discrimination based on gender identity, per se, including transgender status.”

And so today, we will not waste our time satisfying hate and fear by trying to explain humanity. We will just say again and again:

Transgender women are women. Transgender men are men. Transgender & nonbinary people are people. And all are equal humans at that.

And to put it in words that all elected officials can understand: the Platform community is coming together to say that if you want our votes, you have to protect our rights. That includes protection from discrimination and freedom to live the gender identity that we know to be true. This is non-negotiable.

To our transgender, gender nonconforming, non-binary peers: We see you. We hear you. We will follow when you lead. We will amplify your voices. We will work, march, and stay by your side. And we will continue to fight when you need to heal and preserve.
