A sophomore finds a women in STEM award and assumes it is meant for someone already in a lab. Scholarships for women in STEM actually start with high school seniors and run through PhD candidates, so the right match depends on your level.
Awards also differ in who receives the money, what they require and when they close. If you are coming back to study after a break, see our guide to scholarships for women returning to school. The sections below sort STEM funding by level and show how reviewers read an application.
Undergraduate and graduate awards side by side
Level is the first filter, and it is less rigid than it looks. Pathways to Science lists the BHW Women in STEM Scholarship as open to undergraduate and graduate female students in STEM degrees. BestColleges describes the BHW Scholarship as covering women pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree in STEM at a U.S. college or university. Read the sponsor’s own page for the exact level before assuming a cutoff. An undergraduate-only award such as the Virginia Heinlein Memorial Scholarship is a different decision from one that spans degree levels.

| Award | Who it targets | Amount | Deadline | Planning use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Young Women in STEM Scholarship | High school seniors and undergraduates | $5,000 each for three winners | June 10 | The earliest entry point, suited to seniors choosing a college and to current undergraduates. |
| Virginia Heinlein Memorial Scholarship | Undergraduate women at four-year accredited colleges in engineering, math, or physical or biological sciences | $4,000 each for four winners | April 1 | Confirm your major and four-year enrolment before drafting anything. |
| BHW Scholarship | Women pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree in STEM at a U.S. college or university | $3,000 | April 15 | Suits applicants who may move from a bachelor’s to a master’s programme. |
| Learner Tutoring Women in STEM Scholarship | U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents | $1,000 | Oct. 20 | Check citizenship or residency status first; it is the entry condition. |
| Jeanne E. Harris Chrysalis Scholarship | Geoscientist women whose education was interrupted by life circumstances | Up to $5,000 | May 31 | Fits geoscientists completing a dissertation or thesis after a break. |
| Amelia Earhart Fellowship | Women of any nationality pursuing a Ph.D. in aerospace-related sciences, engineering, or space sciences | $10,000 | Applications open in July | A doctoral-level award, so prepare your research materials before the July opening. |
Amounts, deadlines and eligibility above come from BestColleges’ roundup of scholarships for women; confirm the current cycle with each sponsor before you plan around a date.
Why targeted awards still exist
A common assumption is that women no longer need dedicated funding because they already dominate higher education. BestColleges reports that nearly 60% of all graduate students are women, but that figure covers every field, not only STEM. The same roundup notes that women made up only 35% of the STEM workforce in 2021, against about 47% of the total U.S. workforce. The gap sits in STEM specifically, which is why sponsors aim awards at these fields rather than at women in general.
Undergraduate funding beyond the headline awards
The best-known names are not the only large prizes. FutureSTEMinists’ scholarship list adds several undergraduate awards with bigger amounts and stricter requirements:
- Women at Microsoft (WAM) Scholarship. It is for women or non-binary high school seniors with a GPA of at least 3.0/4.0 who plan to study STEM at a 2- or 4-year college. The application requires a letter of recommendation, a transcript and a career statement.
- Cards Against Humanity Science Ambassador Scholarship. It is aimed at rising and current undergraduates. Five winners receive 20,000 each, and winners are announced in the spring of the application year.
- Hyundai Women in STEM Scholarship. Five winners receive 10,000 each.
- SNC Women-In-Stem Scholarship. Around five scholarships of 7,500 each are given, a GPA of 3.5/4.0 is encouraged, and the deadline falls in January.
The listing does not name a currency for these amounts, so confirm currency and terms on each sponsor’s page. Treat 3.0 as a hard gate for WAM, and read the 3.5 for SNC as a level the sponsor encourages, not a guarantee of selection. Applicants with a strong transcript should weigh the larger prizes first. Applicants still building a record may find the high school senior and undergraduate award in the table above a more realistic start.

Funding routed through your college
Not every STEM award is something you apply for with a sponsor directly. According to Pathways to Science, Clare Boothe Luce Program grants go to four-year degree-granting institutions, not directly to individuals, with preference for supporting women in the physical science and engineering fields. A student cannot send an application to the program itself. She can ask her department or financial aid office whether her institution holds such a grant and how students are selected for it.
Institution-specific packages can also be large. The same Pathways to Science listing notes that the College of Saint Mary’s Marie Curie Scholarship Program offers a package of up to $20,000 per year for four years toward a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or math. If you are still choosing where to study, compare packages like this against the sticker cost of each programme, since they are tied to enrolment at that college.
Graduate fellowships and where to find them
Graduate funding is narrower and usually tied to a field or a stage of study. The Amelia Earhart Fellowship pays $10,000 to women of any nationality pursuing a Ph.D. in aerospace-related sciences, engineering or space sciences, with applications opening in July. The Jeanne E. Harris Chrysalis Scholarship offers up to $5,000 with a May 31 deadline for geoscientist women completing a dissertation or thesis after an interruption. Both appear in BestColleges’ list, along with the BHW Scholarship for master’s students.
Three routes are worth working through in turn:
- Field-specific sponsors. Awards such as the Earhart and Chrysalis name a discipline, so a search by subfield turns up more than a general scholarship search does.
- Curated women’s listings. The Pathways to Science page for women groups programmes by user group, which makes it easier to separate undergraduate entries from graduate ones.
- Your own institution. Grants held by universities, like the Clare Boothe Luce funding, can support graduate women in physical science and engineering, so ask your department what it administers.

How committees evaluate applicants
The listings in this guide show what reviewers screen on and what a complete file contains. They are clearest about eligibility gates and required documents, so those are the parts you can plan around.
- Eligibility screens come first. Sponsors set conditions such as enrolment level, a field of study, a minimum or encouraged GPA, or U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. An application that misses a condition is unlikely to reach a comparison of merits, so check these before writing.
- The document set is specific. The WAM Scholarship asks for a letter of recommendation, a transcript and a career statement. Choose a recommender who can speak to your work in your field, and give that person the award’s requirements and deadline.
- Fit with the award matters. The Virginia Heinlein award names engineering, math and the physical or biological sciences, and the Chrysalis names geoscience and an interrupted education. Write to the group the sponsor describes, not to a generic STEM audience.
- Deadlines are spread across the year. SNC closes in January, Virginia Heinlein on April 1, BHW on April 15, Jeanne E. Harris on May 31, Young Women in STEM on June 10 and Learner Tutoring on Oct. 20, according to FutureSTEMinists and BestColleges. A running tracker by date serves you better than one concentrated push.
Frequently asked questions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can women who are not U.S. citizens apply? | It depends on the award. The Amelia Earhart Fellowship is open to women of any nationality pursuing a qualifying Ph.D., while the Learner Tutoring Women in STEM Scholarship requires U.S. citizenship or permanent legal residency. |
| Do any awards consider financial need? | Yes. For the WAM Scholarship, financial need is considered in selection, alongside the GPA and the documents it requires. |
| Do all awards require an essay? | Requirements differ. The Hyundai Women in STEM Scholarship requires a 500-word essay about STEM tech projects that can help society, and it pays 10,000 each to 5 winners. |
| When are winners announced? | For the Cards Against Humanity Science Ambassador Scholarship, winners are announced in the spring of the application year. |
